Upcycle Milk Crate

Before my dad left for Philippines, we tackled another small project. It’s always fun and exciting doing projects with my dad.

I found this old milk crate someone was throwing so I picked it up. It had a small rust inside. I scrubbed it with soap and water then painted Rust-Oleum satin clear coat. If I had to do it over again I would have probably used grey gloss spray to really hide the rust. But then I would lose the original color and design of the crate….

We had a bunch of old wood outside from other project so my dad helped me cut them, glue them together with wood glue and sanded them. I bought him a router for Christmas and finally we were able to try it out. The router created a nice design on the side of the wood. It added a perfect touch. Then all we had to do was stain it. I had some left over stain from another project so we used that. Finally we just added another wood on the bottom as a stopper.

It’s beautiful and I’m so proud of our upcycle project. We gave this milk crate a little love and it turned into a beautiful side table for my daughter.
* I forgot to take a picture of the original milk crate but I found a similar picture online so I used that.

Let me know what you think.

Newspaper Envelope

For those who really know me, I reuse/recycle greeting cards. Or I make them into my own. It’s such a waste to use them once then throw…But the problem is that I never find the right envelope for them.

This month we are going to a couple birthday parties and I recycled some birthday cards and couldn’t find envelopes.

So I made my own from newspaper comics.

What a great idea!!! Those newspaper would have been recycled anyway. Instead we have another use for them before going to the recycling bin.

You won’t find the step by step diy instructions here. There are many sites that offer you templates. But if you’re still confuse and would like to know my trick… Email me.

I think the side way style came out pretty unique… What do you think? What do you prefer?

Monster toilet paper rolls

So the girls got together again and we did another art project with more toilet paper rolls. Thanks to my mother in law who saved me a bunch of toilet paper rolls from the Chinese Firecracker project. I didn’t want to throw them out so we made monster!!!

This time, I bought acrylic paint which worked a lot better. I found old t-shirts and used them as smocks for the girls.

Monster Toilet Paper Rolls Painting

Of course we painted over them and I drew the monsters. But the girls had so much fun getting their hands dirty and picking colors to paint.

Monster Toilet Paper Rolls

Stay tune to see what we are going to use them for…

Chinese Firecrackers

Chinese New Year is coming up and what better way to prepare by making some firecrackers with the girls out of toilet paper rolls.

Firecrackers are used to drive away evil spirit.

The girls had so much fun painting each roll with red paint. (I had to go over it with acrylic paint)

Then I used my left over gold ribbons with glue gun to tie them all together.

Hairpin Legs Wood Coffee Table

I got these tree trunk from a friend. Its been sitting in my garage for about 2 months now. I think its pretty dried up. So today I got to work with my dad with this project.

I have been pintersting and found what I can do with this. I bought some 16″ hairpin legs ($13-$25 each leg) and started on this project.

First I took off the bark then started sanding with 60 grit sandpaper. It came out pretty nice so I kept it at that. (I like the little imperfection and grooves on the wood… makes it look natural)

Then I painted it with wood stain. Next time im going to pick a different color. Im not too crazy about this color.

Finally the side table is complete!!

12/24/2016 – UPDATE: Next time i might have to dry it longer… i noticed a couple of cracks, which in a way gives the table character…

Christmas in a Brown Paper Bag

Its that time of year where I start thinking about Christmas presents. You have to start early to beat the crowd and get some good deals.

This year I had a lot of extra brown paper bag.

So for my daughter’s teachers, I decided to print on the brown paper bag and stuffed it with miscellaneous items.

Its the thoughts that counts! 🙂

Lane Chest Filing Cabinet

Somebody was throwing away this beautiful Lane Chest. This is my third Lane chest that i have picked up.

I know what you’re thinking… DONT PAINT IT!!!

The other lane chest were stained and they’re beautiful. I use them for my sweaters and jackets.

I need this to be a little different.

MY PLAN – paint it white and make it into a filing cabinet.

So far, I sanded it to get the stain off…

Halloween Costume

This year we decided (okay I decided) that we are going to be Mario and Luigi and our little girl is going to be Peach.

  • Red and Green Hats (Kmart $5)
  • White, Black and Yellow Felt (Michaels Craft $2)
  • Turquoise sticker jewel (Michaels Craft $1)
  • Blue Suspenders (Kmart $16)
  • White Gloves (Dollar Store $2)
  • Red and Green Long sleeve shirts (which we had)
  • Pink Dress (we used an old Tinkerbell dress – no one noticed the wings)

Total Cost: $26 for all three costumes! cha-ching!!!

Cut the white felt and used glue gun to get it on the hat. Cut the black felt and used double sided tape (lasted on our upper lip for a couple of hours!) Sewed the yellow felt on the dress and added the turquoise jewel sticker.
